The Piprahwa Stupa, at Kapilavastu, Siddharthnagar, UP, is where a portion of the sacred relics of Lord Buddha, later known as the Piprahwa Gem Relics were excavated. Later a part of it was taken out of India by the Pepe family. Through the timely and decisive intervention of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, in 2025, these were repatriated to India after 127 years. India’s civilisational Buddha heritage was rightly brought back to India.
It was a great experience to finally visit the Piprahwa Stupa. The complex is now well connected, a light and sound show has been recently inaugurated. Urge you all to visit Piprahwa and absorb its history, and its geopolitical and civilisational significance.
“…And the Sakyas of Kapilavatthu came to know that at Kusinara the Blessed One had passes away. And they sent a message to the Mallas of Kusinara, saying: ‘The Blessed One was the greatest of our clan. We are worthy to receive a portion of the relics of the Blessed One. We will erect a Stupa over the relics of the Blessed One.” (Last Days of the Buddha – The Maha Parinibbana Sutta)
