A very fulfilling moment this morning in Santiniketan – was deeply moved to felicitate the legendary Professor Suniti Kumar Pathak, foremost expert on #Pali, #Sanskrit and #Tibetan sources of Buddhism. Among the remaining few who studied under the iconic linguist Professor Suniti Kumar Chattopadhyay and the other iconic scholar of Pali Prof Beni Madhav Barua, Professor Pathak has dedicated a lifetime to Pali and Sanskrit. Among his numerous publications is a Tibetan translation of Gurudev #Rabindranath Tagore’s poems. He joined Visva Bharati in 1953 and today at 100 (born in 1924), his memory remains razor sharp, his articulation, though slow, is lucid. He expressed delight at Pali being declared as #ClassicalLanguage, elucidated its significance and the need for its dissemination and popularisation. He recalled with a twinkle in his eyes, his classes with Prof Suniti Kumar Chattopadhyay learning Pali. “Prof Chattopadhyay would lose himself teaching and speaking in Pali. One almost felt as if he was transported to that era, when Lord #Buddha himself delivered his sermons,” he told us as we took leave have received his blessings and wishes.
