“My fervent desire is to die in harness, struggling and striving for the truth when the end finally comes…” – Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee died in the early hours of 23 June, 1953, in detention in Srinagar. Despite repeated appeals from his mother and a plethora of leaders from across the political spectrum, Jawaharlal Nehru refused to institute an enquiry in his sudden and mysterious death. He was cremated on 24 June 1953, in Keoratala burning ghat, in south Kolkata, amidst a mammoth crowd gathered to pay their final farewell…
