#New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party will hold a silent march with the tricolor flag on the eve of Independence Day to commemorate the horrors of Partition. In a directive to the party’s state branches, the central leadership said, “Two programs should be organized in each district to highlight the horrors of partition before the general public.” BJP observes 14th August every year as Partition Remembrance Day. The main feature of which is a public silent march and a program in the auditorium.
BJP National President JP Nadda formed a team of six leaders to monitor and oversee the Bibhajan Vibhishika Memorial Day activities. Members include Harsh Vardhan, Dushman Kumar Gautam, Narendra Singh, Anirban Ganguly, Shiv Shakti and Preity Gandhi. The instructions to all state units said that the procession should be silent in memory of those who suffered during partition. The guidelines also state that banners, placards and national flags can be part of the procession but party flags are not required.
The BJP will also honor the families who survived the Partition and the Gerua Dal is also collecting relevant literature and photographs for an exhibition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced on August 14 last year that the day would be observed as Partition Atrocities Day to commemorate the struggle and sacrifice of people. Prime Minister Modi also mentioned that lakhs of people were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hatred and violence caused by Partition.
Modi said, “The Day of Commemoration of the Partition should remind us of the need to remove the poison of social divisions, discrimination and strengthen the spirit of unity, social harmony and human empowerment.”
In 1947, the British colonial rulers partitioned India and separated Pakistan as a Muslim country. Massive riots followed shortly after the partition in which millions of people were displaced and hundreds of thousands lost their lives. India will celebrate 75 years of independence this year.
